Boxing in Portland
Are you looking for Boxing in Portland, Oregon? or Cardio kickboxing in portland, oregon? It helps to know what to look for and what to avoid. Often we start with “boxing near me” and go from there. most people aren’t going to travel more than 10 minutes to or from a gym, so finding one close to you is helpful. I have personally found it well worth my time to travel across the city in order to get the best training offered.
The first thing I’m looking for from a gym is a professional, business like approach to their program. Secondly, I’m always on the look out for bait and switch tactics. if the deal being offered sounds too good to be true, it probably is or there are strings attached. local gyms might offer 30 days of free training but when you meet and suffer through their high pressure sales pitch it turns out they want to lock you into a 2 year contract and wont charge you for the last 30 days of your contractually obligated training period. the same goes for weight loss challenges, 6 week tranformation bootcamps, and other nonsense like that. if the gym can’t give you direct, clear answers on pricing and membership options then don’t waste your time with them.
hygiene is the next most important thing when it comes to training at a gym. when you walk in, how does it look? how does it smell? a host of nasty bacteria and fungi can live in all sorts of places when it comes to gyms. on the mats, the bags, the loaner equipment, even on paying members own gloves or shin pads. a clean gym is a happy gym.
Lastly, does the gym have a competition team? are the techniques being shared and taught also finding success in the ring? weather or not a coach is a fighter doesn’t matter, but pressure testing a gyms techniques by competing locally is a great way to separate the what from the chaff.
