What exactly goes on during a boxing lesson? Well, that depends on what you want to get out of it. at OTTpdx we focus alongside our clients on their goals by putting them into three separate categories: fitness, fighting, and self defense. Often I describe this as a venn diagram because most people’s goals don’t fit neatly into just one of these options.
Our fitness clients get to learn to box (or kickbox) while also burning a mountain of calories, toning up their muscles, and de-stressing. Our coaching staff will teach proper technique but the focus is on cracking pads, hitting the bag, and keeping the heart rate up while having fun.
Our fighting clients tend to have their own strength and conditioning regiment in place so their training is a more focused on the technical aspects of these martial arts. dialing in form, discussing application and theory, and tightening up the nuts and bolts of how they use striking in the ring or cage.
Self defense clients still get to learn to throw strikes the same as anyone else but the focus is on stress inoculation, situational awareness, and some base level grappling to escape chokes, holds, and pins. with this in mind it’s also important to point out that many of the benefits of learning to box or kickbox also help with self defense. Not just the physical aspects, but the confidence you get in knowing you can defend yourself changes how you carry yourself which can make you less likely to be victimized.
