a great weekend of boxing in portland!

I love Boxing in portland.

We fought 3 times and learned 3 unique boxing lessons.

A Post fight breakdown of the cinco de mayo tournament at Tom McCall Waterfront Park hosted by Rip City Boxing

The On Target Training PDX boxing squad had a great time representing American Top Team Portland and Underdog Lawyer Michael Fuller. The weather held out for us which was surprising considering the ominous clouds looming all weekend. As always, Rip City Boxing put on a stellar event and the water front provided a dramatic background for a weekend packed with boxing action.

OTT’s own Sarah Sears won two fights in two days as she made her debut under our banner. The greatest compliment I can receive as a coach is people telling me about the improvements they’ve noticed in my fighters and I had several folks come tell me what a transformed boxer sarah is. Lesson 1: trust the process! sometimes we get bogged down in the details and can’t notice the growth were making because were in the middle of it day after day.

lesson two is similar in that it has to do with trust: Sarah got a TKO win over her first opponent on saturday and sunday I saw the opening to do it again. I was calling for more pressure, more aggression, to try and set up another check mate but sarah was still boxing a little more cautious. Lesson 2: trust your boxer. She saw or felt something I wasn’t privy to and was boxing accordingly. After the fight we discussed it and Sarah had felt the power in her opponents right hand and was putting the respect on it that it deserved.

for our third fight of the weekend our young stand out Sonny stepped between the ropes for his first official fight. Sonny is a monster in the gym and he battled valiantly but wasn’t busy enough to warrant a decision win despite a beautiful performance. now that he has a better idea what competition boxing is like I predict he’s going to be one hell of a competitor to contend with. Lesson 3: people don’t think boxing be what it be, but it do.

Until next time!
